Fashion is a powerful medium for exploring identity and feeling comfortable in one's skin. However, as its popularity grows, so does the rise of fast fashion and overconsumption. This shift not only fuels environmental degradation but also encourages a culture of short-lived trends and quality often sacrificed for quantity.

Prior to researching this topic, our team knew fast fashion was "bad" or "not good for the environment", but what we saw during research completely intensified and gave depth to our perspective. If we want to continue this wave of fashion expression, we need to become more conscious and intentional about our clothing habits.

After gathering and synthesizing insights using affinity mapping, we noticed differing levels of importance that people place on clothing. At the core of these levels of interest is a blend of fashion for practical wear and expression, going hand-in-hand.

From what we saw in other mobile closet applications, the main driving point was a canvas for collaging different pieces together on a blank background. Some of them also had closet statistics to show percent of closet worn or closet color breakdowns. However, our responses were directing us toward a solution that allowed realistic visualization for inspiration along with environmental accountability.

Our team envisioned three core features to start: the "For you" page generated by the algorithm or posts from friends, an AI chat for declutter suggestions and clothing inspiration, and a profile to store wardrobe items, posts, and statistics.

During a lecture, my HCI course professor said that "an online community helps apps gain popularity due to sharing and community engagement". This came at a time where we were iffy about implementing a social aspect. My professor gave me feedback that, for the sake of this app, we'd want a more subtle social aspect since we're still balancing the need for not only inspiration but also sustainability. We don't want people buying everything they see.

Next steps! My team of engineers and designers are in the process of developing and deploying Starpool's first MVP. We plan to work side-by-side with the engineers in order to communicate our ideas and the feasibility of features. In later MVP's, we hope to iterate on real-user feedback as well as tie in incentive-based features to help promote urgency in joining rides and offering to drive.
Key takeaways! This project saw countless loops and curves and jams, but I wouldn't replace it for anything. Through our discover and define phase, we took it step by step, making sure to do it with intention. It opened my perspective to the many angles this problem could be looked at and will, most definitely, be carried into my next projects as a reminder to think big and then narrow. Most importantly, this process taught me how to effectively communicate the importance of research and creating a product for people.
